About the Entrants

In 1978, one-hundred ninety artists submitted slides of 390 works. Fifty-six works by 44 artists were selected for that first show. Quilt National '07, the fifteenth biennial competition, drew more than 1100 entries by more than 550 artists from 46 states and 23 foreign countries. Among the more notable developments is the increasing number of international artists. There is a growing interest in contemporary quiltmaking in numerous foreign countries. Entries were received from as diverse places as Korea, Spain, Belgium, and South Africa.

While quiltmaking remains predominantly a women's activity, more and more men are choosing to express their creative energies in this way.

The inspiration for the artists' work comes from many sources, although fewer and fewer of the entries reflect a direct influence of early quiltmakers. While some artists are exploring totally new avenues, the "fabric sandwich" format remains an integral part of the work. Many contemporary quiltmakers are just now reaching the stage at which they have produced a body of work which represents their particular style.
